Is brain health coaching right for you?

Who can benefit from health coaching to reduce cognitive decline? Can a halth coach help reduce risk

What can coaching accomplish?

Up to 40% of dementia risk can be attributed to modifiable risk factors. Changing these risk factors can have an impact on your brain health long term and your mental clarity in the short term - even if you have a family history of Alzheimer's disease.

As a brain health coach I work with you to reduce your risk factors for dementia and to optimize your brain health and cognitive functioning now.

Coaching is individually tailored. You choose the goals and we work out a plan together. Most people can make noticeable and sustainable changes in 12 weeks.

Improved cognitive function

Research now shows that health coaching can improve cognitive function, such as memory,. While improved cognitive function may be realistic in 12 sessions of coaching for some clients, others may be glad to halt or delay cognitive decline. If you have been diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), or are noticing subjective cognitive decline  you still have time a window of time to reduce your risk of converting to dementia. The earlier you start the better.

You are ready to take action to maintain your brain. You want changes that will last. And you want the skills to manage your own health in the long-term.

Who do I work with?

Mid-life to older adulthood...

If you are noticing declines in your memory or other cognitive functions (like thinking clearly, planning, organizing, language) that do not yet reach the criteria for dementia, then brain health coaching might be a good fit for you. You may be noticing these changes in later life or midlife.

We now know that the pathology that underlies Alzheimer's disease and some other conditions often starts decades before the disease is typically diagnosed. You might start noticing changes in cognition well before the disease is clinically diagnosable. The earlier you intervene the better the chances of preventing dementia.

Confidentiality and confidence

Confidentiality and confidence

Many people feel too embarrassed to talk to their doctor about their problems with memory or cognitive function. Many others don't want it on their health care record. I am a confidential person you can talk to work on your mental clarity. I am never dismissive of your problems, and take the time to listen and help you find solutions.

Create a holistic approach to healthy brain aging

Work with your healthcare team

There are many very good reasons for talking about your concerns with cognitive health and dementia risk.

For example the problems you are noticing could be due to a treatable medical condition, like diabetes, thyroid disease, B12 deficiency or certain medications. A good primary care physician can take a thorough history and medical examination and can recommend further testing to check for explanations. In addition , depression and some other mental health conditions are well-known to produce cognitive  problems, so it is well worth talking with your doctor or mental health provider to ensure any mental health conditions are being managed before starting coaching.

I highly recommend you work with your healthcare team.

Who can diagnose Alzheimer's diease and related dementias?

Alzehimer's disease and related dementias are diagnosed by a medical doctor or psychologist. If you would like to be assessed for dementia, please talk to your primary care provider. They can provide initial screening and referrals to specialists for additional testing. If you already have dementia I cannot help you prevent it (by definition!)!

As I am not a medical doctor or psychologist, I also do not treat depression or other mental health conditions. However I am happy to work with clients whose mental health conditions are already being managed by their other health care providers.

Coaching for healthy brain aging

Different from sports coaching

Health coaching is different form sports coaching. I'm not going to tell you what to do and then crack the whip. My role as a brain health coach is to encourage and support you to make the changes you want to make, equipping you with the skills you need to sustain those changes and to make new changes on your own. You will be surprised at what you can achieve and how much you will grow!

Encouragement, not education

Though I have a Ph.D. and extensive education in the areas of brain health and dementia risk reduction, in my capacity as health coach I do not act as an educator - so I'm not going to bombard you with information. I can refer you to useful resources on topics that interest you.

Sessions by telehealth or phone for your convenience

For your convenience I offer coaching sessions by phone or using secure  telehealth video calls where we chat face-to-face. Many clients are most comfortable with sessions by phone.  While I would consider offering in-person consultations at a memory clinic or other similar setting in Colorado, most clients find it inconvenient to travel weekly to an external site for appointments.  I am available to work with clients across the nation via phone or telehealth.

Individually tailored to your specific needs

This is no one-size-fits-all program. We will work on the goals you want, take realistic steps to get you there, using evidence-based coaching approaches.

Time-limited

To produce meaningful changes in your dementia risk factors you need lifestyle changes you can sustain. Typically sustainable health behavior change takes at least 12 weeks. This allows you to experiment with what works and establish new habits. It allows your body to adapt and results to show. I recommend weekly sessions to maximize continuity and feedback.

Confidential

The content of our conversations is completely private and confidential. I will not share your information with anyone unless you want me to. All sessions, communications and notes are HIPAA  compliant.

What about health insurance?

These coaching services are not covered by health insurance. While this means your sessions must be paid privately, it also means all sessions are completely confidential and no information is shared with the insurance system at large.

Discovery call

In this free (and obligation-free) session we talk by phone for 45 minutes about your goals  and ask your questions to find out if brain health coaching is a good fit for you. If we agree that it is, and you decide to work with me, here is what you can expect next.

Risk assessment.

If you decide to proceed with coaching you will complete some brief screening and risk assessment tools that will help to inform you and provide yu with ideas on areas you may want to focus on.

Strategic planning.

Typically 90 - 120 minutes. This can be broken down into two calls or combined as one. We will cover:
a) Your health. I will ask you abut your current health, cognition and lifestyle.
b) Your goals. We will explore your vision for your health and cognitive function.
c) Plan of action. Together we will develop a realistic set of goals to work on to help you achieve better memory and mental clarity. This plan can be refined as we move forward.

Ongoing sessions.

Typically weekly, 45-50 minute sessions. Each session we will create small and reasonable steps to try out during the week, find ways to build on your strengths and creativity to make them achievable  and learn and grow from the outcomes.

Final session.

We will review your progress and develop strategies to maintain your success! Coaching has a clear end. If you ever decide to do more coaching on new goals I will be here!

Simple and personal

As a health coach I focus on your strengths to create action plans that align with your goals. Each week you will experiment with approaches that you enjoy. The process is fun, and the results are rewarding!
